  • Robert Mehalso, Ph.D., is president of Microtec Associates and a world-renowned expert in nanotechnology and nanofabrication. He founded Microtec in 1993 after nearly more than twenty years of academic and industrial experience in research, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing. Mehalso has developed businesses in high-volume micromanufacturing processes for fuel injection nozzle structures, ink-jet print heads, medical diagnostic devices, and optical and wireless communication devices. He is a director of the Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation John S. Heller, Ph.D. is director of reagent development for Abbott Laboratories and supervises a team of fifty scientists and technicians. Heller led the team that developed the first commercially available test for HIV antibodies in the blood. This enabled large-scale screening of blood donors and significantly reduced the risk of acquiring HIV infections from blood transfusions. He has managed the development of numerous tests for sexually transmitted diseases, and his team is currently developing reagents to be used in testing for hepatitis and HIV. Steve McCurry is probably best known for his photo of the Afghan refugee girl with the mesmerizing eyes on the June 1985 National Geographic magazine cover, although his work has been published in Time, The New York Times, and many other publications. He has won many of photojournalism's highest awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded in 1984 by the National Press Photographers Association. In the same year he won an unprecedented four first prizes in the World Press Photo Contest. McCurry also twice won the coveted Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award. His most recent award was in 1998, when he was named Life Magazine's World Photo Winner. He has published several books of his work.
